First Candle is an American nonprofit health organization with the goal of uniting parents, caregivers and others nationwide with government, business and community service groups to advance infant health and survival. They are working to increase public participation and support in the fight against Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).

In their most recent press release titled Researchers Closing in on a Likely Cause of SIDS, First Candle has found extensive evidence that babies falling to SIDS have been found to have low serotonin levels. This is of particular interest to us because they have linked low serotonin levels in babies to overheating and carbon-dioxide. First Candle also goes as far as to say that babies should be dressed a baby sleep sack to help avoid SIDS.

The press release is quite extensive and detailed so I'll just take a minute to highlight some of the quotes:

  • "Soft bedding and other items are dangerous and can keep your baby from getting enough fresh oxygen or can cause suffocation. Remove all soft bedding and other items from your baby’s sleep space, including blankets, pillows and soft or pillow-like bumpers, when placing your baby down to sleep."
  • "Make sure your baby does not get too warm. Use lightweight sleep clothing and keep room temperature at what would be comfortable for a lightly clothed adult. If your baby has a fever, take extra care to be sure the baby does not get too warm."
  • "Use a wearable blanket or sleeper instead of loose blankets if needed to keep your baby warm."
